(Figure Presented) A new strategy for gold and palladium dual-catalytic reactivity and turnover, called catalyzed catalysis, enhanced the synthetic usefulness of vinylgold intermediates by providing dual-catalytic carbon-carbon cross-coupling as an alternative to protodemetalation. This protocol enabled the synthesis of substituted butenolides and isocoumarins from allyl esters. Kinetic and spectroscopic experiments support a mechanism in which the Lewis acidic gold complex catalyzes both an initial rearrangement step and a subsequent Lewis basic palladium oxidative-addition step.

Triterpenoid saponins from Dianthus chinensis

Four novel triterpenoid saponins, dianchinenosides E, F, G and H have been isolated from the aerial parts of Dianthus chinensis L. Dianchinenosides E and F, G and H are diastereomers with the only difference being in the stereochemistry of the 1,2-propanediol residues esterified to the C-23 of their aglycones. Their structures including the absolute configuration of the 1,2-propanediol fragments were established by spectral and chemical evidence as well as chiral HPLC analysis.

Anisotropy spectroscopy of chiral alcohols, amines, and monocarboxylic acids: Implications for the analyses of extraterrestrial samples

Stereoisomers of distinct chiral amino acids were observed to occur in L-enantioenriched form in carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. Meteoritic amines and monocarboxylic acids were recently shown to occur in racemic ratio. In this study we investigated the electronic circular dichroism and anisotropy spectra of chiral alcohols, chiral amines, and chiral monocarboxylic acids. We recorded circular dichroism and anisotropy spectra from 280 to 170?nm in aqueous solution using a synchrotron-radiation ultraviolet circular dichroism spectrophotometer. The obtained anisotropy spectra are employed to discuss the likely role of ultraviolet circularly polarized light leading to enantioenriched amino acids, as well as racemic amines and monocarboxylic acids during their primordial interstellar synthesis. These data will moreover accompany the European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission, which successfully landed Philae on the nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov?Gerasimenko to search for chiral organic molecules.

A novel synthesis of thienopyridine, pyrroloquinolinothiophene, pyrazolopyridin-3-yl-phenylthiourea and thiazolylpyrazolopyridine derivatives

Dibenzalacetones 1a-c reacted with cyanothioacetamide (2) to give the new styrylpyridinethione derivatives 3a-c which were used as the starting materials for the synthesis of other several heterocyclic compounds. Reactions with chloroacetone (4), N-arylmaleimides 7a,b, and ethyl iodide gave 2-S-acetonyl pyridines 5a-c, pyrrolo[3,4-f]quinolines 9a-f, and 2-S-ethylpyridines 11a-c, respectively. Several cycloaddition reactions were carried out on 3a-c, 5a-c, and 6a-c with dienophiles 7a,b, to afford the corresponding cycloadducts 9a-f, 10a-f, and 8a-f, respectively. Structures were established based on elemental analyses and spectral data. The antimicrobial activity of the newly synthesized compounds was tested.

A general procedure for synthesis of 5-phenyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione derivatives is described. The synthesis involves the cycloaddition of (alpha- chlorocarbonyl)phenylketene with carbonyl compounds to generate the corresponding substituted 2-oxetanone’s which is readily transformed to the final products in one step. The 1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione is a rigid cyclic structure, and can undergo easy hydrolysis.

Harnessing biocompatible chemistry for developing improved and novel microbial cell factories

White biotechnology relies on the sophisticated chemical machinery inside living cells for producing a broad range of useful compounds in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. However, despite the impressive repertoire of compounds that can be generated using white biotechnology, this approach cannot currently fully replace traditional chemical production, often relying on petroleum as a raw material. One challenge is the limited number of chemical transformations taking place in living organisms. Biocompatible chemistry, that is non-enzymatic chemical reactions taking place under mild conditions?compatible with living organisms, could provide a solution. Biocompatible chemistry is not a novel invention, and has since long been used by living organisms. Examples include Fenton chemistry, used by microorganisms for degrading plant materials, and manganese or ketoacids dependent chemistry used for detoxifying reactive oxygen species. However, harnessing biocompatible chemistry for expanding the chemical repertoire of living cells is a relatively novel approach within white biotechnology, and it could potentially be used for producing valuable compounds which living organisms otherwise are not able to generate. In this mini review, we discuss such applications of biocompatible chemistry, and clarify the potential that lies in using biocompatible chemistry in conjunction with metabolically engineered cell factories for cheap substrate utilization, improved cell physiology, efficient pathway construction and novel chemicals production.
